Nanci Hester, M.S., LMSW, is a licensed clinical social worker who treats children,
adolescents and adults struggling with mood disorders, emotional regulation issues,
anxiety, social skills challenges, adjustment concerns and attention problems. She also
works jointly with children and parents experiencing attachment issues and explores how the
very earliest relationships impact emotional health and the capacity to develop subsequent
healthy relationships. Nanci looks at how the entire family may be impacted by a family
member’s behavioral and emotional difficulties and often works with siblings who are
affected, but frequently go unrecognized.
Nanci is part of the assessment team at the Glovinsky Center for the Child and Family. She
believes parents are essential in the assessment phase of a child’s evaluation and that the
information they contribute in the parent interview is critical for identifying issues, developing
recommendations and creating a plan for treatment for their child.
Nanci co-facilitates a psycho-education/support group for parents of young children with
mood and emotional dysregulation issues. Parents often have a tremendous need to
express their feelings of sadness, frustration, exhaustion, despair, anger and grief about
their children and their role as parents. Nanci often works individually with parents of children
of all ages who feel they need to further explore their feelings of living with a child who is a
challenge to parent.
Nanci also co-facilitates a social skills group for girls. This provides a wonderful forum for
girls to develop skills for initiating and maintaining relationships, practice problem-solving,
work on appropriate group behavior and experience successful social exchanges.
Nanci has a Master’s of Social Work degree and a Graduate Certificate in Infant Mental
Health from Wayne State University. Prior to that, she received a Master’s of Science degree
from the University of Illinois with a focus on behavioral health. Nanci has presented at
national conferences and published in the areas of parent-child relationships, the effects of a
mood disorder on the family and the impact on children when a sibling has emotional
challenges or an attention deficit. Nanci has taught an undergraduate course in the Health
Education Department at the University of Illinois. She has worked with children, adolescents
and adults in the mental health field in multiple settings including hospitals, mental health
agencies, schools and home-based programs.
